Holiday Shoppe

There was excitement in the air on Wednesday night as our students enthusiastically went about selecting gifts for loved ones for the upcoming holidays.  The challenge for some was calculating their purchase total and determining whether they had enough money to support their selections. The addition of a wrapping station this year helped students with their desire to maintain the element of surprise.  And of course who couldn't avoid selecting an item form the wide array of bake sale treats. Our thanks to all who made it a magical event!

Parent Math Program

On Monday, November 30th we will be hosting an informational session:  Strategies Behind the Mathematics for PARENTS of our students in  grades 1-5.  There will be two grade focused presentations according to the following schedule:
·        Grade 1 and 2 parents are invited from 6:15-7:15 pm
·        Grades 3, 4, and 5 parents are invited from 7:15-8:15 pm

The focus of these workshops, offered by Susan Brass, Maryanna Biedermann, and Kerri Falzone, our math specialists, will be to continue discussions on how to best to help children with their understandings, as well as homework, as they move through the next topics in math. At this workshop we will work to build understanding around the common language, concepts, and strategies involved in place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Childcare will be provided from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

Hope we see you there!

Coffee with the Principal

We had a wonderful conversation about recess activities, standardized testing and intervention during our first Coffee with the Principal session last Thursday, November 19th. I think we all learned from the opportunity to converse together.  Though the number of participants was small, I look forward to having more guests on January 21st when we do it again.

Luce Literacy Night

We were thrilled to have so many students and families attend our Literacy Night last night.  We had approximately 90 guests. Our read-a-louds and corresponding literacy related activities focused on the work of author and zoologist Nicola Davies. Students created poetry, illustrations, identified fascinating facts in literature, played I Spy with books, went on an author scavenger hunt, beautified the landscape scene from The Promise, played scrabble and "Guess Who Reads" at our school. Our children were having so much fun they hated to see the evening come to an end. It was a wonderful evening of shared adventures!

Veteran's Day

We celebrated Veteran's Day on Tuesday with Canton representatives from all branches of the service. We talked about how it is much more than just a day off from school. We took time to remember and think about those Veteran's who have fought, and sometimes died, to keep us safe and free. Some students performed Readers Theatre while others read poetry, essays or expressed our gratitude. We thanked our visiting guests for their service. Our students were an incredibly  respectful audience, especially during the solemn  parts of this event.

Welcome to the Dean S. Luce Elementary School blog.  At our school we encourage our students to SHINE. That is, they will be (S)afe, (H)elp one another, (I)nclude one another, (N)ever give up, and (E)ncourage excellence in themselves and each other.  We believe that there are moments and events everyday that can’t be captured in a monthly newsletter or on a school calendar.  They are opportunities for recognition and celebration.  This blog will provide us with an additional means to communicate with others about what our school is all about.
